Frequently Asked Questions

HOW CAN I SELL NAIL SERVICES?

A client must see a POSTED state issued license at all times for anyone selling nail care services in Virginia. The state can violate any person in the state of Virginia with a Class 1 misdemeanor for selling any type of nail service without a license issued by the state regulating department, DPOR. If the service was free, then there is no violation. Clients have the right to see a Nail License at any time and they can sue an unlicensed Technician (selling nail care) for thousands to millions of dollars for any damage and even for a tiny cut caused from a file/nipper. Clients can also sue the salon owner for having unlicensed Nail Techs sell services in their business.

DO YOU HAVE FINANCIAL AID?
There is no financial aid like pell grants for nail education in Virginia. This is one of the biggest reason why Licensed Nail Technicians are in such high demand!  Massage, Esthetics (skin care) and Barber/Cosmetology schools education can offer financial aid. There are other states in the US that offer financial aid for nail education but not in Virginia. The state also does not accept any nail education done 100% online to get a Nail License so watch out for those scams because it won't lead or credit you to getting a nail license. You have to go inside a state licensed school to get hands on training under the supervision of a state licensed Instructor to be able to get credit hours towards licensing requirements.

If you need financial help contact your local Social Service case worker or disability worker for financial help. We can send your case worker an invoice to attend a course here. Those getting this kind of financial help should consider the Advance or Designer course to get the supplies they need. Tutoring for ESL students is an additional cost.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE IN THE LEVELS?

The Basic level is designed for those that are very fast at acrylic becuase they already know how to do them. They may have some questions that they can get assistance with but for labs they finish faster to focus on other things.

The Advance level is designed for most students with little or no nail care experience.

The Designer level is designed for students that have the money to take a course that can teach them more than the minimum needed to take the state exams. More details are given on things that are not on the state exams like dipping, hard gels, nail art and more detail to those wanting to open a business soon without having to work for years elsewhere to learn what is needed to avoid costly first year mistakes in the nail salon business.

HOW LONG IS THE ONLINE COURSE?
The online training is self paced with 24/7 access to finish 100 hours of online book study. Students can choose to do all, some or the minimum online work before attending classes. The course is NOT done all online. No school anywhere in the state of Virginia is permitted to provide all 100% online training towards getting a nail license. Watch out for scams that say they will teach you how to do nails but in the small print they mention to check with your state for regulations because they can't allow you to be able to take the exams to get a Nail License. Virginia requires students to go inside a state licensed school with an approved program to get training under a state licensed Instructor. All of these licenses must be posted near the front desk or door for you to view or the school is in violation to be reported. All beauty schools must post a license.

WHEN DO I ATTEND?

This school offers a very unique flexible way to attend! Students start with about 20 hours of online study before attending. Students attend 10-20 days by appointment on a select open Sat/Sun between 10am-5pm. Some students work/learn fast while other students may want a slower paced learning experience. We can go your learning pace! Check the Lab Page to see what dates are left to book.

BUT I ALREADY KNOW HOW TO DO NAILS?

Many students come here with nail care experience. We have a Basic level of training for them to focus more on the State requirements to get a nail license since their skill level is already advance. If you get your nail license it will help you feel more confident knowing that you are not in violation or get potential lawsuits from clients at anytime to lose your personal property. Owners of salons can lose their salon license and/or be fined for having unlicensed Nail Techs sell services. Unlicensed nail techs usually do not know what they can/can't do (or sell) such as cutting any living tissue on the feet or fingers. Also a small cut from a file or nipper from an unlicensed Nail Tech (charging money) can allow a customer to sue you later for thousands to millions of dollars. Unlicense Techs can be reported to DPOR.

HOW MUCH IS THE COURSE?
Students can start a course here anytime, there is no start date for a class. The current course cost is listed online. The school may offer specials occasionally. Take advantage of specials while listed to get the best offer. Increase in supply cost and demand can reflect a change in the cost for another month. Payment plans are only offered for a limited time to ensure a pay off within a year. The payment plan option is closed between April-Oct.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I CAN DO NAILS?

Students leave here going into many different fields using their nail skills. Management, ownership, employee, sales rep, product educator, etc. Some students come here with years of experience and just want their license to go to the next level of self employment.

Most students move on during or after completion of the course into doing mani/pedi services in a salon setting to build their confidence and skill while practicing acrylic at home on family and friends. Acrylic skills can take about a year of consistant servicing to master unless they came into the course with acrylic skill. People can use the trade skill full time or part time, some use a nail trade to network into other careers and some do it for fun. Whatever you use it for it is a great trade skill to have to make quick cash when you need it.

This course is about getting your license. The state exam to get licensed does not care about how beautiful your nails are, how famous you are on youtube or instagram and may not appreciate that you have been doing nails for years unlicensed. When coming here, put your social media lessons to the side and be humble enough to understand that no matter how long you have done nails there is always something new to learn. After course completion continue to study advance skills by watching videos or attending nail shows or events.

HOW DO I GET MY LICENSE?

This is a state licensed & approved school to allow graduates to take the state exams to get their nail license. After passing the course here, students will be prepared and released to take their state exams to get their state nail license.

The course is NOT about just doing nails! CLICK HERE for an example chapter pages to see what you have to memorize. There is ALOT of reading, studying, homework and following steps to learn in class. Students can fail this course with no refund by not getting a passing grade in this course and not finishing by their deadline. Students must understand that they must study at least 10 hours a week to do well in this course.

WHAT IS A TUTORIAL COURSE?
A tutorial course is not a course that leads to licensing. Anyone can take a tutorial. A beauty license is not needed to take a tutorial. If you do have a nail or cosmetology license you can get $25 off. Most tutorials are 2-3 hours long. BEFORE PAYING for a Tutorial make sure you have a date reserved. Most dates are on a Saturday or Sunday with rare Mon or Wed hours. Email sales@vanailschool.com to ask about dates and other questions.

CAN I PROVIDE NAIL SERVICES AT  HOME?
Yes, as long as you have a nail technician or cosmetology license and a salon license posted for customers to view. Check your hoa and county/city for their own regulations to open businesses in a home. If you have others doing nails they must have an apprentice or nail license posted too.

WHAT IF I CAN'T ATTEND ALL DATES BY THE DEADLINE?

Students that do not finish all requirements their deadline have failed the course with no refund. Credit for attended hours are on record with the state for transfer to another school. Most students that don't finish by their deadline and fail did not plan to attend responsibly and did not set aside enough time to do the homework regularly. Failed students can pay to retest and pay $200 per needed day not finished before the deadline. Extended online access is extra.

Basic Course deadline anytime before 7/1/2020

Advance Course deadline anytime before 8/1/2020

Designer Course deadline is anytime before 10/1/19.
The school is closed around state holidays, a 1-2 weeks in June/July and all Saturdays in Aug-Nov. The school does not have classes in Dec but online study is always open year round.

HOW DO I FINISH FAST?

Typically it takes 3-6 months to finish the course but those that attend responsibly and study regularly can finish quicker.  Students must complete all 100 hours of online study and attend to finish state requirement lessons.

Students have a lot to learn before taking the state exams! Having a license means that you were tested in a state secured facility to have the capability to provide a safe and sanitary service to the public. A state license is not issued until the state exams are passed and that cool art stuff  learned on YouTube will not show you what is needed to pass.

HOW DO I COMPLETE THE COURSE HERE?

Students need to study at home 10-20 hours per week to pass! Students must attend their hours responsibly with a passing grade, complete homework with a passing grade, pass testing at the school under security cameras with a passing grade and complete all lab assignments to pass. After passing, the student is released (and fully prepared) to take the state exam to get their nail license. The grade to pass here is 78% or higher average of attendance, homework, testing and lab assignments. We are only licensed to teach you the information needed to pass the state exams.  We do not give the state exam. You are required to go to a professional exam company (hired by the state) to offer the state exam in a very secure facility with strict supervision for cheating.

WHAT DO I NEED FOR SUPPLIES?
Basic students don't get supplies. They will need a apron, files, buffers, acrylic liquid/powder by day 3 of class. They also need about $300-500 worth of supplies to do homework at home and to take the state exams. A list is provided in the online study course. For those in the Advance Course their needed supplies are added to the cost. For those in the Designer Course everything plus more is included.

WHAT ELSE DO I PAY FOR AFTER PAYING FOR THE COURSE?
Basic students need about $300-500 worth of supplies to do homework at home and to take the state exams. The advance and designer level students get their supplies. Both need paper material and added product replacement when using up all their stuff at home. Students will always want to buy more various nail supplies as their skills grow.
After passing the course here, students need to pay the state exam center $172 to take their exams. The state license fee is $75 paid to the state to get their license. State exam cost is per try to pass. To stay licensed the graduate will pay the state $75-105 every two years to stay licensed. When moving into other states there is a fee to transfer your license into that state. Anyone can be multi-state licensed.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I CAN GET A NAIL LICENSE?

Visit the REQUIREMENTS page to see what is required by the state to get a nail license in Virginia.
You have to be at least 16 years old with a valid DMV PHOTO ID.
You MUST present a SS card if you were issued one by the government.

Any crimes or violations must be reported to apply for licensure.

ADA accomodations are offered to exam takers with signed documentation.

WHAT ABOUT APPRENTICESHIP?
We do not offer apprenticeship education here. You must find a registered Virginia Salon willing to sponsor you. An apprenticeship is a paid (min wage) relationship between an employer and employee during which the worker or apprentice learn a trade. The training lasts a specified length of time. An apprenticeship covers all aspects of the trade and includes both on-the-job training and related instruction. To become an apprentice: contact the employer that will sponsor you, register as an apprentice by having the employer call an a State Apprentice Representative for your area.  Division of Apprenticeship at 804-371-3104 or the US Department of Labor & Industry Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training at 804-771-2488. Apprentices must also finish (along with their 2,000 hours of training in a salon done in no less than one year) a written course inside a state licensed school this is usually one day a week on a Monday.

DO YOU HAVE ANOTHER LOCATION?
At this time this is the only location. This school is located in a commercial business shopping center in Central Virginia. More than 80% of the students here drive an hour or more to attend. About half of our students drive about two hours to attend classes. This school offers weekend dates to attend.  We will only offer occasional weekend hours in 2021.
We are looking to relocate from this area sometime by 2021 to a nearby city location. We have not fully decided on the city yet, we are still looking at several places in Virginia.

CAN I GET LICENSED IF I HAVE A MISDEMEANOR OR FELONY CHARGE?
All students must get police reports of misdemeanor or felony charges (less than 20 years ago) to include with their state license registration at the end of the course. The Instructor will keep any information shared about charges private from all other students and from the community of people outside the school staff. These documents can take a while to get to you so they should be requested when starting the course. The instructor will privately help you with understanding how to get these forms.

First of all just be honest about your charges. Those that apply for licensure and lie about their charges can have a long term delay and an instant denial for licensure that will be reported for any other future state license applications. They do not review your charges for licensure until you pass a state licensed course and pass the state exams for licensure first.

The state will discuss your charges to review a customer's physical and financial safety to purchase services by you as a State licensed Nail Technician. We have students with violations that did get licensed but we have no control in the decision to get a student licensed. If you have your papework together it can move along faster but there is a delay compared to students without violations. We are only licensed to teach you the state approved course. They may request an interview to attend and let them know that you have learned from your past mistakes to approve you for licensure.

WHY DO I NEED A NAIL LICENSE?

Anyone selling a nail care service in the state of Virginia must have a nail license posted. Selling any nail services unlicensed at any location (including in a home) in Virginia is prosecutable with a class 1 misdeamenor. BUT there are many people selling nail services in Virginia without a license and as their skills get better they are unable to move on the next level of self employment to earn better pay. It can be difficult to teach experienced students the requirements to pass the state practical exam but it is done here. The course here is about learning the information needed to pass the state exams to get a license. Only time doing nails over and over makes you great!

If you don't see a state "salon" license with the business name and a license for each person selling beauty care services in any salon, then they can be reported. Even those in training must have a DOLI issued license to apprentice. Not having the license posted for customers to view is the first violation, the second is not having one. If you get an infection from an unlicensed salon/tech you can report them to DPOR or contact a lawyer to sue the Tech and the Salon owner for selling unlicensed services.

CAN I DO LASHES, TATTOOING OR MICROBLADING WITH MY NAIL LICENSE?

No. Anyone providing these types of services must have and post a Esthetics, Tattoo and/or Cosmetology license to sell any these services. Those selling these services without a license can be reported for violation. If you provide these services without a valid state license you can be sued by the customer at any time for damages and violated for a Class 1 misdemeanor by the State. The owner of the salon can be violated as they are responsible for hiring licensed staff.

CAN I GET A TEMPORARY LICENSE WHILE IN SCHOOL TO WORK?

Students can apply for a temporary license after they pass the course, have their personal information verified to be approved to get a Virginia State Nail Technician License, pay the $172 to take the state exams and pick a written state exam date. This temporary permit must be signed by a currently licensed nail tech or cosmetologist that will be in the salon supervising you when you work in the salon they work at. You have to have a licensed sponsor.

Personal info verification can take 2-4 weeks or more if you have a criminal history. Picking a written exam date takes less than a week after approved for licensure. Your state license is issued within a few weeks of passing both exams. State exams are available in several locations in Virginia.
