 Practical Exam

​Look at your ProV account. You have one year from that date next to APPROVED to pass both exams and pay your license fee or you have to pay to retake any passed exams again! They don't care about any delays or issues you had so PLAN to pass both exams and pay the fee before 1 year.

Prep for Practical Exam

Now that you have passed the state theory exam you can gather your supplies to take the practical exam. 
 

  1. Gather your exam supplies
     

  2. Practice the steps using the CIB printout and video
     

  3. Book your practical exam asap (dates can be full fast especially in the summer)
     

  4. Reach out to me to book a last class before you take the practical exam to check your bagging (or get a ready-to-go state tote here) and check your odorless acrylic application (if you did odorless acrylic sculpting in your last class and have a tote we can do this class by video chat) Text me if you don't see a date, sometimes I can work you in.
     

  5. Take the practical exam (retries are $95 with supplies)
    You must pass the theory and practical within 11 months of being approved to take them or you will have to pay to reapply to take both (even if the theory was passed)
     

  6. After passing both exams mail the envelope with only the license fee form with $120 to get your license by mail in about 3-6 weeks. Congrats!

You do not need to apply the alcohol wipe in the updated 2026 exam. Remove the alcohol pads from your first aid kit in your basket. Do not remove supply bottles/tools from your table until after polish removal in manicure and after you do the blood spill. Keep your table neat at all times and only sanitize your hands when necessary. 

Make sure you have your supplies when you come to the last class here unless you are buying a tote. Buy it online or at the school.

If you have issues booking with ProV online you can pay/book by phone calling (833) 310-6427. Calling to reschedule must be done 2 days or more before your booked exam to avoid losing your paid cost.

The exam takes 2 hours to complete

PLAN TO ARRIVE EARLY! Just in case of traffic, taking wrong exits and getting lost. Locations are in a shopping center.

WHAT TO WEAR? Look neat with hair tied back, no tummy or cleavage showing. No shoes with holes like crocs or shoes that expose your toes or the back of your heels. No bracelets or long necklaces.

  • Enter the building 10 minutes early with your supply tote and no papers/notes

  • Bring your State Photo ID

  • Your cell phone will be turned off and put in a locker with your car keys. Hang the locker key at the end of your desk on the hook.

  • They will take your photo and you will sit at your desk while everyone else is registered

  • Your ID will sit on the edge of the table face up

  • They will read instructions and you will perform services. Stop when they stop.

  • You can ask to use the restroom during the exam but please use it before the exam starts, its usually in the back of the building.

  • Clean up anything you drop and keep your tote lid closed when not in use. It will sit by the wall under the desk. 

  • You can sit or stand but most people sit

  • AFTER EXAM

  • they will email you in 1-3 days to check your proV account to let you know if you passed (when they enter it into the system)

  • If you see PASS on both exams under the TAB "Exam Schedule" then mail in the license fee form to get your licence. There is no way to pay it online. If you pay it at DPOR in Richmond they still can only mail your license. Enter your card information at the bottom of the form or mail a check/mo to TREASURER OF VIRGINIA. Make sure your name and address is on the money order if you use one.

  • Your licence will take 3-6 weeks to arrive by mail. If you don't have it in 5-6 weeks call DPOR at (804) 367-8509 to check the status. Press 3. They only accept calls 12pm-2pm on Tue & Wed. 

  • Don't forget to leave the school a google review AFTER you pass the exams so people know I am not a scam and that you can get your license by coming here.

Supply List

If you did not or you are not going to get a kit from me then bring these items to a last class or have ready when doing a video chat before you take the practical exam. All these items are in the kit I sell.

All these items will be a plastic storage tote or duffle bag that does not have any side more than 30”. A 20-30qt tote is big enough (or 5-7 gallon tote).

· small basket with no holes on the bottom

​· Travel size Qtip box (not the multi box with cotton balls and wipes)

· 1-2 Metal pusher

· 1-2 course nail file (80/100 or 80/80 or 80)

· 1-2 medium nail file (100/180 or 100 or 180)

· 3 course or medium nail buffers (not the tiny mini ones)

· 4-5 woodsticks

· Glass dappen dish (no lid)

· Condiment dish with a lid like for ketchup/salad dressing

· Acrylic nail brush 1-2

· Scrub nail brush x3

· 2 tubes of new nail glue

· Primer (any kind with a manufacturer label saying primer)

· Odorless liquid/powder (sheba brand recommended on amazon or I sell here $20)

· Rubber hand with nails glued in (use Loctite or gorilla gel glue) I sell for $20

· Ziplock bag with 3-5 folded paper towels

· Ziplock bag with 4-5 pairs of gloves

· Pump hand sanitizer 8oz any scent/brand

· Bag of flat cotton wipes (tall skinny bag)

· Air dry top coat (not combo or label it TOP COAT)

· Air dry base coat (not combo or label it BASE COAT)

· Metal finger nail clipper (big curved)

· 3-4 disposable table towels or dental bibs in any color

· 4-6 sheets of paper towels (full size best)

· 1-2 cuticle oil bottle (no brush only dropper)

· 3 ziplock bags (labeled CLEAN TOOLS)

· 1 gallon ziplock bag (labeled CLIENT 1)

· 1 gallon ziplock bag (labeled CLIENT 2)

· a 2 or 2.5 gallon ziplock bag (CLEAN DISPENSARY)

· 3-4oz travel bottle filled with water (labeled WATER)

· 2-3oz travel bottle filled with body lotion (labeled CUTICLE REMOVER)

· 2-3oz travel bottle filled with liquid soap (labeled SOAP)

· Small travel size lotion in 2-6 oz

· Red air dry polish (no gel)

· bag of full well tips for each fingernail on dummy hand

· 2 hand towels (different color is best) you can use dish drying towel

· 1 wash cloth (clean no stains)

· Acetone pump with good quality acetone (label ACETONE if not labeled)

· White flat first aid kit (2-4 bandaids, 2-3 finger cots and 1 glove)

· CaviWipes Disinfecting Towelettes 45 count wipe pack or 3 individual wrapped

· 3 brown paper grocery bags. Mark out brand names with a marker and label them TO BE DISINFECTED, SOILED LINEN and TRASH on all 4 sides using a marker, big label or paper taped to the bag. 

· 1 kitchen size pastic trash bag

Individual sanitizing wipes are $1.50 each

You can NOT use a table clamped hand. It has to be a hand with no removeable parts or stand. The nails must be securely on it before you arrive to the exam center.
